Example findings

The kind of things I find

Six findings from recent reports for local service businesses, with the details removed. Each one comes with why it matters, so you know what to fix first.

  1. 1
    Content

Nothing has been updated in years

The last edit to any page was years ago, and the blog has a single post. The installation page is one short paragraph, so a competitor describing the same service in more detail ranks for it and you don't.

Why it matters Google and customers both read an unchanged site as a business nobody is minding.

  2. 2
    Design

The design looks older than the business

The layout, fonts and small photos look about ten years old, next to competitors who have rebuilt recently. The work itself is better than the website suggests.

Why it matters The design doesn't need to be special, but it can't look abandoned. People judge it in seconds.

  3. 3
    Enquiries

Your contact form asks too much

The form asks nine questions, including budget and address, before anyone has spoken to you. There is no quick way to just ask a question.

Why it matters Every extra field loses people. Name, contact and a short message is enough for a first enquiry.

  4. 4
    Google

Directories rank above you, and you're missing from some

For your main service and town, Angi, Yelp and YellowPages all appear above your website, and two other directories that rank for it, Houzz and the BBB, don't list you at all.

Why it matters People who land on a directory also see your competitors. Complete your listings, add the missing ones, and each one links back to your website.

  5. 5
    Errors

Small errors are holding the site back

Nine links lead to pages that no longer exist, including your own name on the service pages. The phone number can't be tapped on a phone, and there's no structured data, so Google and AI tools like ChatGPT can't read the business details.

Why it matters Each one is small and most are an afternoon's work, but together they cost you calls and make the site look unmaintained.

  6. 6
    Tracking

    You can't see what's working

There is no Google Analytics and Search Console isn't set up, so there is no record of which searches bring people in or where they leave.

Why it matters Set up Analytics, Search Console and Microsoft Clarity (free, shows where people click) so every fix can be measured.

Every report ends with "What I would do, in order": the afternoon fixes first, then the work that changes your search results.
